It can be observed that the sun-gear experiences an additional rigid-body translation of period equal to that of the pitch error distribution, superimposed on the axial elastic displacement field. As expected, unequal load sharing generates axial vibrations on the members as illustrated in Figure 7-a and 7-b. The situation then periodically evolves with the rotation of the error distribution attached to the sun-gear which progressively moves from one planet to the next at the sun-gear rotational speed.
At the beginning of the simulation, the maximum of the pitch error distribution is located on sun-gear/planet 4 mesh, which coincides with the position of the maximum dynamic factor (on the helix with maximum error) while the load on the opposite hand is minimum. It can be clearly noticed that unequal pitch errors on the two hands of a double helical gear lead to asymmetric load sharing between the two helices. The dynamic factors versus time are shown in Figure 6-a and 6-b. As a result, the validity of the manufacturing method of double helical gears using a multi-axis control and multi-tasking machine tool was confirmed. Moreover, this manufacturing method was applied to pump gears.
The relationship between the tool wear and life time of end mill are made clear. Afterwards, the pitch errors, tooth thickness, runout, profile, lead, and surface roughness of manufactured double helical gears were measured and these errors were small, respectively. After rough cutting, the gear-work was heat-treated, and it was semi-finished and finished based on a CAM process through the calculated numerical coordinates. The material of the gear-work was SCM440H and the gear work was machined by a swarf cutting using a coated carbide radius end mill. A vertical machining center with 5-axis for CNC milling machine was utilized. For this study, first the numerical coordinates on the tooth surfaces of the double helical gears are calculated and the tooth profiles are modeled. This manufacturing method has some advantages as arbitrarily modification of tooth surface and machining of the part except tooth surface in addition only one machine settings. In this paper, the double helical gears are manufactured using a multi-axis control and multi-tasking machine tool in order to overcome these problems. The manufacturing method of bevel gears has been proposed using this development process ( 5–7). It has been possible to machine the complicated shape because of the development of a multi-axis control and multi-tasking machine tool ( 3, 4). However, the phase difference of oncoming gears must be controlled with high accuracy and the machining of the gears is restricted due to tooth arrangement. The large-sized double helical gears are usually generated using a special generator. Due to their advantages, double helical gears have been widely used for power transmission in gas turbine, generators, prime mover, pump, fan, and compressor in marine ships and construction machine. Therefore, high loading capability and steady transmission are advantaged. The axial thrusts are opposite one another, and the forces are contained in the gear and not transmitted to the bearing. The total face is made into two equal halves, both with the same helix angle but with opposite hands ( 1, 2).
